When You Feel Small – The Promise Is Still Yours
Key Passage: Numbers 13–14
Theme: Trusting God’s promises over fear
Seeing Giants, Forgetting God
The Promised Land was finally within reach. God had delivered His people from Egypt, provided manna in the wilderness, and led them by a pillar of cloud and fire. Now, at the edge of Canaan, Moses sent twelve spies to explore the land.
What they saw was exactly as God had promised: fertile soil, flowing streams, and fruit so large it took two men to carry a single cluster of grapes. But ten of the spies couldn’t see the blessing—they only saw the giants.
“We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” – Numbers 13:33
Fear distorted their vision. Instead of focusing on God’s power, they fixated on their own weakness.
A Different Spirit
Only two—Joshua and Caleb—believed.
“We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” – Numbers 13:30
Not because the giants weren’t real, but because God’s promise was bigger than their fear. Joshua and Caleb saw the same landscape, the same cities, the same warriors. But they remembered who was with them.
When You Feel Small
You may feel like a grasshopper too sometimes—tiny in comparison to what’s in front of you:
That big decision
That intimidating opportunity
That long wait
That heavy grief
But feeling small doesn’t disqualify you from God’s promises. In fact, it’s often when we feel weakest that His strength shines brightest.
Faith Isn’t the Absence of Giants
Faith means we walk forward even when giants are real. It means believing the Promised Land still belongs to us, even when fear says otherwise.
Sometimes the loudest voices are the ones that tell us we can’t. But God’s voice says,
“Take the land. I am with you.”
A Prayer for Today
Lord, when fear makes me feel small, remind me that Your promises are still true. Help me trust like Caleb and Joshua, not because I’m strong, but because You are. Give me boldness to step into what You’ve already said is mine. Amen.
