Everyone Did What Was Right in Their Own Eyes – The Cost of Moral Drift

Judges 21:25

Key Verse:
“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” – Judges 21:25

Purpose:
To expose the danger of living without God as our authority and to call our hearts back to Him as the true King who brings order, wisdom, and life.

How Judges Ends

Judges does not end with celebration.
It ends with a warning.

After all the deliverance, all the mercy, all the second chances, Scripture closes with a single sentence that explains everything that went wrong:

Everyone did what was right in their own eyes.

This wasn’t freedom.
It was chaos.

When God was no longer acknowledged as King, people became their own authority—and the consequences were devastating.

When Truth Becomes Personal Opinion

The people of Israel didn’t wake up one day intending to reject God. They simply stopped seeking Him.

Without God’s guidance:

  • Right and wrong blurred

  • Justice became inconsistent

  • Compassion disappeared

  • Self-interest took the lead

Judges shows us that when truth becomes subjective, everyone loses.

Doing what feels right is not the same as doing what is right.

The Quiet Danger of Moral Drift

Moral drift is subtle.
It doesn’t announce itself loudly.

It begins when we stop asking, “What does God say?”
And start asking, “What works for me?”

Judges reminds us that without God as our anchor, even well-intentioned people can make destructive choices.

God’s Design for Authority

The problem wasn’t that Israel lacked a human king.
The problem was that they rejected God as their King.

God’s authority was never meant to restrict His people—it was meant to protect them.

When God reigns:

  • Truth is steady

  • Justice is clear

  • Mercy is present

  • Life flourishes

The Purpose Behind This Warning

The purpose of this final verse is to leave us with a choice:

Will we live according to our own understanding—or surrender our lives to God’s wisdom?

Judges prepares our hearts for what comes next in Scripture: the longing for a righteous King. A longing ultimately fulfilled in Jesus.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, guard my heart from drifting away from You. Help me seek Your truth instead of trusting my own understanding. Be the King of my life—my decisions, my values, and my direction. Lead me in Your ways, even when they challenge me. Amen.

Reflection Questions

  • Where might you be tempted to rely on your own judgment instead of God’s Word?

  • How do you stay anchored in truth when culture pulls you in different directions?

  • What would change if you fully surrendered an area of your life to God’s authority?
