Lift Your Eyes – The Bronze Serpent

Key Passage: Numbers 21:4–9
Theme: Healing comes by looking up

A Desperate Cry for Help

The Israelites were discouraged again—tired of the journey, tired of the manna, tired of waiting. In their rebellion, they spoke against God and Moses. Then came the consequence: venomous snakes in the camp. Pain. Panic. Death.

In desperation, the people cried out for mercy.

God’s response was unusual—He didn’t remove the snakes. Instead, He told Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it on a pole. Anyone who looked at it would live.

“Then when anyone was bitten… they looked at the bronze snake, they lived.” – Numbers 21:9

The Power of Looking Up

There was no formula. No striving. No earning. Just look up—and live.

It was a moment of faith. A moment of surrender. A moment where healing didn’t come from within but from God’s provision above.

And this wasn’t just about the Israelites in the desert. It pointed forward to something greater.

Jesus Lifted for Us

Jesus Himself said it:

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” – John 3:14–15

Our healing doesn’t come from fixing ourselves. It comes from fixing our eyes on Jesus.

When we’re overwhelmed by guilt, shame, sickness, or sorrow, the answer is the same: Lift your eyes.

Keep Looking

Sometimes the wilderness feels long. The pain feels sharp. But God hasn’t abandoned us. He has given us a Savior who was lifted up—not just to be seen, but to save.

And just like then, when we look, we live.

A Prayer for Today

Jesus, when I’m overwhelmed, help me look to You. When I’ve failed, remind me that You were lifted up for my healing. Teach me to stop striving and start surrendering—to lift my eyes and live. Amen.
