Love Your Neighbor – The Heart of God's Law

Key Verse: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Leviticus 19:18

It Was Always About Love

Long before Jesus walked the earth and spoke about loving your neighbor, God had already written it into the law. Right there in Leviticus—a book often thought of as strict and structured—love was at the center.

God didn’t want His people to just follow rules. He wanted them to be marked by love—especially for one another. This verse doesn’t just appear as a suggestion. It’s a commandment that reflects the very heart of God.

Who Is My Neighbor?

It’s tempting to think of our neighbors as the people who are most like us. But Jesus later expanded this command to mean anyone in need—the outsider, the overlooked, the hard to love.

Love in Leviticus meant looking out for the poor, treating workers fairly, forgiving debts, and telling the truth. In short: it meant reflecting God’s justice and mercy in everyday life.

And that’s still our call today.

Real Love Is Active

To love our neighbor isn’t just about good intentions—it’s about intentional actions. It means choosing kindness when we're busy. It means helping even when it costs us something. It means extending grace, even when it's hard.

Love is more than a feeling. It’s a lifestyle rooted in God's heart.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, open my eyes to see my neighbors the way You do. Teach me to love with actions, not just words. Help me to be quick to serve, slow to judge, and ready to reflect Your heart wherever I go. Amen.
