Crossing the Jordan – Stepping into God’s Promises
Key Verse:
“The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.” – Joshua 3:17
The Setting
The Jordan River was at flood stage. Its rushing waters created an impossible barrier between the Israelites and the Promised Land. But God had promised them this land—and He was about to show that no obstacle, no matter how overwhelming, could stop His word from being fulfilled.
The priests stepped into the waters carrying the Ark of the Covenant, and suddenly the current stopped. The people crossed on dry ground, every tribe, every family, every person.
The Deeper Lesson
Sometimes the promises of God seem out of reach because obstacles stand in the way. Like the Israelites, we see the floodwaters rising, and we wonder how we’ll ever get through. But God specializes in making a way where there is no way.
The Ark symbolized God’s presence. His presence went before them, parting the waters, proving that it was His power, not theirs, that secured the promise.
The Purpose
The purpose of this story is to remind us that stepping into God’s promises often requires faith before certainty. The priests had to step into the water before it parted. Sometimes, God asks us to move first, trusting that His power will meet us in the middle.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, when the waters feel overwhelming, remind me that You go before me. Give me courage to step forward in faith, trusting that You will make a way for me to enter into Your promises. Amen.
