The Fall of Jericho – Obedience That Breaks Walls

Key Verse:
“When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.” – Joshua 6:20

The Setting

Jericho was an impossible city to conquer. Its massive walls stood as an immovable obstacle between Israel and the Promised Land. From a human perspective, the strategy God gave Joshua made no sense: march silently around the walls for six days, then seven times on the seventh day, blow the trumpets, and shout.

No battering rams. No siege weapons. Just obedience and trust.

The Deeper Lesson

The walls of Jericho remind us of the barriers we face in life—habits we can’t seem to break, fears we can’t shake, or challenges that feel too big. Often, God’s instructions to us may not look logical: forgive instead of retaliate, pray instead of panic, worship instead of worry.

But obedience opens the door for God’s power. The Israelites didn’t bring down the walls—their faith and obedience allowed God to act.

The Purpose

The purpose of this passage is to show that walls fall not by human strength, but by God’s Spirit. Our role is obedience—even when it feels unusual or uncomfortable. God’s role is victory.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, give me the faith to obey even when Your ways don’t make sense to me. Help me trust that my obedience makes room for Your power to bring down the walls in my life. Amen.

  • How might God be asking you to respond differently than you expect?

  • What step of obedience can you take today that invites God’s power to work?
