The Fall – When Brokenness Entered the World
"Did God really say…?"
A simple question. A seed of doubt.
In Genesis 3, the serpent whispered these words to Eve, twisting God’s truth and planting uncertainty in her heart.
And just like that, everything changed.
The First Sin and Its Consequences
God had given Adam and Eve everything they needed—a perfect world, a close relationship with Him, and the freedom to enjoy His creation. There was just one boundary:
“You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” (Genesis 2:17)
But temptation crept in. The serpent convinced Eve that she was missing out—that she could be like God if she took just one bite. She ate, Adam followed, and immediately, shame covered them like a heavy cloak.
For the first time, they felt fear.
They hid.
They covered themselves.
Sin had entered the world, and with it came separation—from God, from each other, and even from their own sense of peace.
God's Grace in the Middle of the Fall
Even in this moment of brokenness, God did not abandon them.
Instead, He called out:
"Where are you?" (Genesis 3:9)
Not because He didn’t know where they were, but because He wanted them to see how far they had drifted.
And then—amidst the consequences—He did something unexpected.
“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” (Genesis 3:21)
Even in their sin, God covered them.
This is a picture of Jesus—the One who would one day cover our sin completely. Even from the very beginning, God had a plan to bring us back to Him.
The Hope of Redemption
Sin entered the world through one act of disobedience. But through one act of obedience—Jesus on the cross—redemption was made possible.
Where Adam and Eve hid in shame, Jesus calls us into the light.
Where they tried to cover themselves, Jesus covers us with His grace.
Where sin separated us, Jesus restores us.
A Prayer for Today
Father, I acknowledge that sin has brought brokenness into the world and into my own life. But I thank You for Your grace that covers me. Help me to walk in Your light, knowing that I don’t have to hide from You. You have made a way for me through Jesus. Amen.
